Polish railway infrastructure and rolling stock developments

Overview

Poland continues to advance major railway infrastructure and rolling stock developments. PKP PLK has received eleven bids for a significant modernization project near the German border, involving the reconstruction of the line between Gumieńce and the border. This project includes electrification, the construction of a second track, and the development of new stations and viaducts, with bids ranging from 958 million PLN to 1.226 billion PLN.

Regarding rolling stock, PKP Intercity has exercised a contract option to purchase 32 additional Griffin EU200 multi-system electric locomotives from Newag. This expansion, valued at approximately 945.6 million PLN net (though some estimates place the value at 775.3 million PLN net subject to price indexation), brings the total planned order for this series to 110 units. The total contract value with Newag is estimated at approximately 2.807 billion PLN net.

The Griffin 200 locomotives are designed for international travel at speeds up to 200 km/h and are compatible with 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC, and 25 kV AC power systems. This allows for service on routes to cities such as Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. While the initial contract for 63 locomotives is underway—with 12 units already received and the main contract expected to conclude by the end of the first quarter of 2028—the new units are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029.
