Political activities of Cuiabá Mayor Abilio Brunini

Cuiabá Mayor Abilio Brunini has engaged in several public disputes involving political and legal institutions. He criticized the Federal Police regarding ‘Operation Heritage’, characterizing the raid on former governor Mauro Mendes’s residence as a ‘spectacle’ for political exposure. Brunini specifically questioned the necessity of an early morning raid to collect Mendes’s passport.

Additionally, Brunini commented on the relationship between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Supreme Federal Court (STF), suggesting the President is unlikely to oppose the Court. He expressed skepticism regarding the National Congress’s ability to challenge STF ministers due to potential conflicts of interest.

On a local level, Brunini ordered a traffic fine against a driver following a confrontation at Praça Alencastro. The incident occurred when a video recording, intended to highlight the expansion of mental health services, was interrupted by an individual shouting political slogans in support of the Workers' Party (PT). During the dispute, the driver claimed a mental health condition to justify parking in a designated space; Brunini demanded medical documentation and directed the Municipal Urban Mobility Secretariat (SEMOB) to issue a fine, subsequently associating the driver’s behavior with the political opposition.

More recently, Brunini has criticized the broader Brazilian political landscape, calling for an end to what he describes as ‘leftist fascism’ and accusing sectors of the left of using the Judiciary to persecute opponents and infringe upon freedom of expression. He also addressed recent election results in Mato Grosso, attributing Senator Wellington Fagundes' defeat in the gubernatorial race to his alignment with the MDB, a party Brunini claims carries a negative image in the state.
