Political activities of Mahamudu Bawumia in Ghana

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and New Patriotic Party flagbearer, has faced scrutiny regarding his political and personal associations. Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, leader of Power Chapel Worldwide and former Secretary to the Board of Trustees for the National Cathedral project, affirmed his continued friendship with Dr. Bawumia and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, despite investigations into the cathedral project by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice. Following these developments, Dr. Bawumia participated in the ‘Pledge Against Corruption’ campaign. This civil society-led initiative, organized by groups including the Africa Centre for Energy Policy and Transparency International Ghana, focuses on the impact of corruption on vulnerable populations. During the campaign, Bawumia stated that personal integrity is more significant than accumulated wealth, characterizing corruption as a practice that “steals resources from the vulnerable and the poor.” As the New Patriotic Party flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election, Dr. Bawumia has expanded his stakeholder consultations. He recently met with national executives of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Accra to discuss healthcare policy, specifically focusing on nursing education, infrastructure, logistics, and the welfare of frontline workers. In response to political discourse, religious scholar Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid addressed claims regarding Dr. Bawumia’s ambitions, rejecting assertions that his candidacy is part of an “Islamic project.” Abdul-Hamid argued that Ghanaian voting patterns show religious identity does not dictate political choices. More recently, Dr. Bawumia has focused on themes of national unity. Speaking at the 2026 National Maulid in Accra, hosted by National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, he called for the preservation of religious harmony and emphasized the importance of embracing diversity to maintain peace.
