Political controversy regarding Kashmir and Pakistan

Overview

National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah sparked political controversy following remarks made during a party convention in Baramulla. Abdullah stated that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums have helped protect Kashmiris and keep the issue alive globally. He also suggested that the Indian government’s current silence on the matter is a result of international pressure.

Abdullah further urged Kashmiris to fight for their rights and identity to prevent them from being erased, expressing confidence that the region would eventually regain its special status under Article 370.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the statements as “seditious and anti-national,” with leaders demanding legal action and a public apology. Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also criticized the remarks, stating that Pakistan is an enemy of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Muslim clerics and the All India Imam Association also labeled the comments treasonous. While the Jammu and Kashmir Congress party distanced itself from Abdullah’s stance on Pakistan, party spokespersons maintained that Pakistan has no right to interfere in India’s internal affairs and suggested his comments might reflect frustration regarding the delay in restoring statehood to the Union Territory.

Political tensions have since escalated, drawing condemnation from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Rashtriya Bajrang Dal. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma joined calls for a public apology, with some leaders suggesting Abdullah should relocate to Pakistan if he refuses to retract his statements. Adding to the criticism, Ghulam Nabi Azad characterized Pakistan as an enemy to both India and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, noting that residents in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are currently protesting for their own rights.
