Political violence and threats in Delta State

On August 13, 2026, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the Delta State governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), reportedly escaped an assassination attempt during a political tour in the Usiefrun community. Omo-Agege reported that armed men opened fire on NDC members, leaving six individuals injured. He attributed the attack to suspected thugs linked to a rival political party.

Following the incident, Omo-Agege alleged that his life and the lives of his family members are under threat from the Delta State Government House in Asaba. He called on security agencies and the international community to monitor the situation, stating that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should be held accountable for any harm to his family.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State dismissed these allegations as “reckless, unfounded and politically motivated,” accusing Omo-Agege of a “campaign of calumny” to gain sympathy ahead of elections. The tension stems from a political rivalry between Omo-Agege and Oborevwori dating back to the 2023 governorship election.
