Preschool infrastructure expansion in the Balkans

Overview

Municipalities across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia are expanding preschool infrastructure to increase capacity and improve early childhood education.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jezero opened its first kindergarten, supported by government funding for staff salaries, while Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje completed a renovation of the ‘Zvončić’ kindergarten valued at approximately 397,799 KM, eliminating local waiting lists.

In Croatia, significant investments continue. The City of Krk opened the Katarina Frankopan kindergarten in Vrh, a 5.59 million euro project utilizing European funds. In the Oroslavje region, the Cvrkutić kindergarten in Mokricije opened following a 5.5 million euro investment. Further expansions include a new branch of the Đurmanec Kindergarten for approximately 80 children and equipment upgrades for the Višnjica branch in Lepoglava.

Recent efforts have focused on outdoor environments and safety. In Metković, the ‘SIGURAN KORAK’ project, supported by over 33,000 euros in grants, replaced concrete with 183.20 square meters of waterproof anti-stress rubber flooring and installed didactic equipment. Similarly, the Municipality of Unešić is finalizing playground renovations at the Radonić branch of the Drniš Kindergarten. Other recreational improvements include a maritime-themed playground in Makarska and a new playground at the Sloga football stadium in Borovo.

In Serbia, the new Izvorčić kindergarten in Mladenovac has opened to accommodate 140 children, marking the first of six planned facilities in the area.
