Property crime and theft in Ontario

Overview

Police in Ontario have reported various criminal incidents involving theft, break-and-enters, and bail violations across several regions.

In late July and early August, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted arrests related to a series of break-and-enters and vehicle thefts. In the Muskoka region, four youths were arrested following a coordinated response by the OPP Emergency Response Team and K9 unit. Additionally, in Kawartha Lakes, a 36-year-old man was detained in connection with a break-and-enter and possession of property obtained by crime.

By mid-August, further reports emerged from St. Thomas and Cobourg. In St. Thomas, incidents included the theft of tools from a vehicle and copper piping from a building, alongside arrests for property crime and bail violations. In Cobourg, police arrested individuals for theft, possession of stolen property, and multiple counts of failing to comply with probation.

In late August, investigations expanded into sophisticated theft tactics in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area. The Halton Regional Police Service arrested 25-year-old Darryl Davance in connection with 14 counts of motor vehicle theft and mischief. Investigators identified a tactic where thieves hide small GPS or Bluetooth tracking devices in wheel wells, bumpers, or behind license plates to monitor Lexus and Toyota vehicles before stealing them.

Concurrently, the Waterloo Regional Police Service launched an investigation into a break-and-enter in the Deer Ridge neighbourhood of Kitchener. Authorities are seeking information regarding a white man in his forties seen photographing homes and yards, as well as a black BMW SUV spotted in the area on August 15.
