Public confrontations of Mexican politicians at AICM

On September 15, former Veracruz governor Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares was confronted by an individual who called him a ‘traitor’ and ‘scoundrel’ in a video circulating on social media. Yunes Linares responded by stating, ‘I did not betray anyone.’ The incident is linked to political shifts involving the Yunes family, specifically their expulsion from the PAN and subsequent move to the Morena party following a vote on judicial reform.

On September 21, Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña was confronted by passengers at Terminal 2 while returning from a government report in Nayarit. Protesters shouted insults such as ‘corrupt’ and ‘narcopolitician,’ and demanded he ‘face the people’ and that there be ‘out with Morena.’ Fernández Noroña defended himself on social media, dismissing the protesters as ‘fascists’ and claiming they were repeating ‘vileities promoted by the media against our movement.’ He further asserted that if he were truly involved with drug cartels, people would not dare to look at him.

Following the airport incident, Fernández Noroña announced he will begin recording and publicly exhibiting individuals who confront, insult, or film him in public spaces. He stated his intention is to provide a complete record so the public can form their own judgment, distinguishing between legitimate political protest and what he characterized as aggression or harassment. While he declined legal action regarding the airport encounter, he emphasized he will use social media to ‘shed light’ on future situations.
