Public health and medical initiatives in Romania

Overview

Romania is implementing various public health and medical initiatives focused on wellness, prevention, and specialized care.

In Iași and Slatina, programs have been launched to promote healthy lifestyles. The “Let’s Grow Healthy Generations” project in Iași County targets students from kindergarten through 12th grade, focusing on nutrition, sleep, physical activity, stress management, healthy relationships, and addiction prevention. Meanwhile, the “Slatina for your health” initiative provides free community health services, including blood pressure, BMI, and diabetes risk assessments.

Efforts are expanding significantly in respiratory health and mobile diagnostics. In Bucharest and Popești-Leordeni, the Romanian Society of Pneumology is organizing free spirometry testing through October 2 to address the underdiagnosis of conditions like asthma and COPD. This coincides with the “State of the Art in Pneumology: between tradition and innovation – 2026” conference in Cluj-Napoca, where experts are discussing lung cancer therapies, biological treatments, and the use of AI in diagnostics.

New mobile initiatives are also increasing medical access in rural and school settings. In Hunedoara County, the SALVITAL caravan will provide free telemedicine consultations, blood glucose monitoring, electrocardiograms, and bone density scans in the communes of Baru, Sarmizegetusa, and Ghelari from October 13 to 16, 2026. Additionally, in Argeș County, the Mediscan Preventis program is launching a mobile clinic screening initiative for primary and middle school students starting October 19. These screenings will assess postural alignment, hearing, vision, and respiratory function.
