Public health initiatives in Nova Iguaçu
Overview
Public health initiatives in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, have focused on both preventive community outreach and institutional quality improvements.
In mid-July, municipal health authorities launched coordinated campaigns, including Men’s Health Week, to encourage regular preventive check-ups. These programs provided free rapid testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis, alongside vaccinations and dental care, aiming to bring men closer to primary care services.
By August, the focus shifted toward hospital accreditation and safety standards. Two major facilities, Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu and Hospital Iguassú Maternidade Mariana Bulhões, received the 2026 Patient Safety Seal. This recognition, awarded by Epimed Solutions in partnership with the Brazilian Institute for Patient Safety (IBSP), highlights excellence in incident management and the ability to effectively investigate and treat adverse events within the public health network.
Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu earned the certification for the second consecutive year, while Hospital Iguassú Maternidade Mariana Bulhões received the distinction for the first time. These were the only public network hospitals in the Baixada Fluminense region to be honored. To qualify, institutions must demonstrate consistent performance in notifying, classifying, investigating, and treating adverse events, with specific criteria regarding the speed of early detection and investigation timelines. Nationally, 325 Brazilian institutions received the seal this year, representing a 41.8% increase from the previous edition.
