Public housing development in Galicia
Overview
The Xunta de Galicia is expanding public housing initiatives across the region through new construction methods and large-scale developments.
In Vigo, the Navia neighborhood is hosting the region’s first industrialized public housing project. This model, which includes 35 units, aims to serve as a benchmark by utilizing technical processes to reduce execution times, mitigate weather-related delays, and optimize material use. Currently, 927 public housing units are in progress in the Navia area, supported by a total investment of 238 million euros.
Further expansion is underway via the Galician Public Housing Society (Vipugal). In Pontevedra, Vipugal authorized the construction of 16 new public homes in the A Parda neighborhood on Rua As Devesas. This 13-story building, which includes garages, storage, and commercial spaces, was awarded to Coviastec S.L. for approximately 2.43 million euros. Additionally, a contract worth roughly 344,607 euros was awarded to transform existing premises in Valdecorvos into three public homes.
In A Coruña, Vipugal awarded a contract to Díaz & Díaz Arquitectos for the design and direction of 264 public homes in the Xuxán neighborhood. This four-building development has an estimated cost of 51.6 million euros and is described as the largest project of its kind in the city. The design phase is expected to last five months, with construction following within a maximum of 31 months.
In San Paio de Navia, Vigo, the Xunta has received seven bids for a 9.6 million euro project to build 80 shared housing units for residents under 36. The sustainable building will feature coworking spaces and solar energy. This is part of a regional strategy to implement 340 shared housing units across Galicia, including Santiago de Compostela, Lugo, and A Coruña.
