Public service and infrastructure crises in Latin America
Overview
Communities across Latin America continue to report widespread failures in public services, infrastructure, and administrative transparency.
In Mexico, the Veracruz administration under Governor Rocío Nahle García is facing criticism regarding administrative opacity. Specifically, the remodeling of the Government Palace has reportedly exceeded 60 million pesos without sufficient documentation regarding contracts or expenditures. Additional financial concerns involve the Universidad Popular Autónoma de Veracruz (UPAV) and potential public bailouts for a bankrupt sugar mill. Furthermore, workers at the ‘Dr. Rafael Lucio’ High Specialty Center in Xalapa have reported major shortages of medicines, surgical supplies, and basic medical equipment.
In Venezuela, infrastructure and sanitation issues persist. In Timotes, local leader Luis Beltrán Pérez Montoya denounced a lack of transparency in pothole repair budgets, describing roadwork as ‘superficial and temporary’. In Barinas, residents of Mi Jardín III have reported sewage overflows caused by illegal urban pig farms.
Other regional challenges include waste management crises, such as the improper mixing of hospital waste and tires at a landfill in Paraguay, fuel shortages paralyzing garbage compactors in Juliaca, Peru, and sanitation issues in Catamarca, Argentina, where nighttime waste disposal leads to animals scattering refuse. In Colombia, authorities are transitioning Santa Marta from a large-container system back to direct doorstep collection.
