Public transportation safety and misconduct reports
Overview
Reports of safety concerns and misconduct within public transportation systems have emerged across several countries. In Paraguay, a passenger with a disability reported mistreatment by Line 11 bus drivers in Areguá, alleging they refused preferential seating and bypassed stops. The Vice Ministry of Transport indicated that the service provider, Bene SA, could face fines if these allegations are proven.
In Mexico, transit issues have ranged from security concerns among students in Morelos to physical violence in Puebla. In Tehuacán, a passenger physically assaulted an Autobuses Unidos driver after a dispute regarding a disembarkation location; the altercation, captured on video, involved the passenger pulling the driver by his tie and knocking him onto the sidewalk. Further misconduct has been reported in other Mexican cities: in Saltillo, passengers alleged that two vehicles on Route 13B engaged in competitive racing, nearly colliding, while in Cancún, a passenger recorded a driver on Route 29 allegedly touching his private parts.
In Ecuador, transit security was also highlighted in Quito, where an intoxicated individual was detained for vandalizing a ticket validator at the Alameda Trolebús station. The suspect, who struck the machine with his fist after being denied entry, faces legal action for damaging public property.
