Rajasthan High Court judicial misconduct allegations
Overview
The Rajasthan High Court remains in a state of unrest following allegations of misconduct against Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma. The controversy was initiated by Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta, who sent multiple letters to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant accusing Justice Sharma of “misusing administrative authority,” “manipulating case listings to favor wealthy litigants,” and “gross maladministration.” Justice Mehta specifically requested the appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another state to lead the court.
In response to these claims, advocates at the Jodhpur and Jaipur benches have launched strikes and sit-ins, staging demonstrations outside the courtroom. While bar associations in Jodhpur have discussed the possibility of an indefinite strike, Chief Justice Surya Kant confirmed that the Collegium is examining the allegations and that Justice Sharma will be granted a fair opportunity to respond.
Acting Chief Justice Sharma has issued a formal denial, characterizing the accusations as “baseless” and claiming they are “motivated by resentment.” He stated that he has provided supporting evidence to the Chief Justice of India to refute the claims of corruption, nepotism, and favoritism. Justice Sharma has requested that the legal community and media exercise patience until the Chief Justice of India delivers a decision.
