Reggio Calabria governance restructuring
Overview
In late July 2026, the newly elected metropolitan council of Reggio Calabria began an itinerant approach to governance, holding its inaugural session in Molochio to approve the 2026–2028 budget. Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro announced that sessions would rotate among various towns to promote territorial cohesion and direct citizen engagement.
Commission leadership was established during this period. Marco Parisi of the Reggio Futura list was confirmed as President of the VI (Productive Activities) Commission, a role Daniele Romeo described as the ‘engine’ for commerce and investment. On 31 July, the council also elected presidents for the remaining permanent commissions, with the centre-right majority securing eight presidencies and the opposition taking the ninth, the Commission for Control and Guarantees.
On 1 August, the council’s Equality portfolio, led by Councilor Simona Caracciolo, signed a cooperation agreement with the Reggio Calabria Chamber of Commerce. The partnership aims to promote gender parity through pay-transparency rules and certification for local firms, noting that women own approximately 24.1% of regional enterprises.
By 7 August, Daniele Romeo was appointed vice-president of the IX Commission for Control and Guarantee, while engineer Giovanni Laganà, formerly of ANAS and the regional administration, was named director general of the municipality. Continuing its outreach, the VI Commission held its first session outside of Palazzo San Giorgio by meeting at the Chamber of Commerce, an initiative intended to move politics ‘beyond closed institutional halls’ to better engage with local businesses and trade associations.
