Release and reception of The Only Living Pickpocket in NY
Overview
The release of a trailer for the crime thriller ‘The Only Living Pickpocket in New York’, written and directed by Noah Segan, introduced the film’s plot involving an aging pickpocket, Harry Lehman, played by John Turturro. The story depicts Lehman’s struggle to survive in a digital New York City after accidentally stealing a high-stakes USB drive, a situation that puts his comatose wife at risk. The film features a supporting cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Steve Buscemi, Tatiana Maslany, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
To prepare for the role, Turturro worked with professional theft consultant Apollo Robbins to develop pickpocketing techniques and methods for blending into crowds. The production was filmed on-site across all five boroughs to allow the city to act as a character. Following its feature at the New York Film Festival, the film was scheduled for a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on October 23, 2026, with a nationwide expansion on October 30, 2026.
Critics have characterized Turturro’s portrayal as a ‘star performance’ and his career best, noting the film’s sincere, softhearted tone despite its crime thriller premise. Consequently, Sony Pictures Classics is reportedly positioning the role for an Academy Award campaign.
