Release of Irene Dionisio film Idda

Overview

The film ‘Idda’, directed by Irene Dionisio, opened the Panorama Italia section of the 24th Alice nella Città festival in Rome. Following a presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film premiered during the festival, which ran from October 13 to 25, 2026.

Set against the landscape of Mount Etna, the narrative follows two childhood friends, Adele and Sofia—played by Tecla Insolia and Romana Maggiora Vergano—as they reunite and attempt to climb the volcano. The title, which means ‘she’ in Sicilian, personifies Etna as a central character. The film explores themes of femininity, memory, and identity through the sensory connection between the two women as they confront long-held secrets and tensions.

Dionisio’s second feature film utilizes elements of magical realism to address loss and the processing of pain. The director stated that the film aims to ‘celebrate female bonds and investigate what remains after absence,’ focusing on the strength of memory. During the festival, Dionisio was honored with the Womenlands Excellence Award and the Millennial Visionary Award.

Produced by Kino Produzioni in association with Rai Cinema, the project received support from the Italian Ministry of Culture, various regional film commissions, and Creative Europe MEDIA.
