Release of Primetime film about Chris Hansen

Overview

The A24 psychological thriller ‘Primetime’, directed by Lance Oppenheim, explores the rise and controversy of the Dateline NBC series ‘To Catch a Predator’. Starring Robert Pattinson as a fictionalized version of journalist Chris Hansen and Merritt Wever as producer Andie Bender, the film dramatizes the mid-2000s era of the program. The narrative examines the transition of the show from Dateline NBC segments to a standalone primetime series, focusing on the tension between investigative journalism and media sensationalism. It specifically looks at the ethical boundaries of sting operations conducted by the watchdog group Perverted Justice and the pressures of competing against major television programs like ‘Lost’. Following its United States theatrical release on September 25, 2026, the film has seen commercial success, earning approximately $19.2 million in its North American debut. This performance marks the third-best opening for A24, trailing only ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Civil War’. Produced for $15 million, the film features a cast including Phoebe Bridgers, Skyler Gisondo, and former child actor Jonathan Lipnicki. Lipnicki portrays ‘Crazyfrog73’, a target in the program’s sting, a role he described as a test of his courage as an artist, noting that the character’s dark nature and a full-frontal nude sequence caused significant anxiety. The film received significant acclaim at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, with critics praising Pattinson’s transformative performance and the film’s visual aesthetics. However, the production has faced intense backlash from the real Chris Hansen. Hansen has described the film as ‘detached from reality’ and ‘98 per cent pure fiction’, criticizing Pattinson’s portrayal as an ‘unlikable’, ‘unhinged’, and ‘aloof’ father. In a satirical critique, Hansen also noted the film’s omission of his alleged celebratory dance moves following successful stings.
