Religious tourism and pilgrimage in Fátima

Overview

In mid-September 2026, stakeholders involved in the Caminhos de Fátima pilgrimage routes met in Mealhada to discuss the future of religious tourism. The meeting, organized by the Associação Caminhos de Fátima in partnership with several regional and national tourism entities, focused on evaluating progress and formalizing a Collaboration Agreement to promote and valorize the network as a structured tourism product.

By early October, the Sanctuary of Fátima continued to host significant religious gatherings. These included a pilgrimage of approximately 1,500 members from the Diocese of Viseu and an annual pilgrimage for the Deaf community, which featured exhibitions commemorating the centenary of the apparitions to Sister Lúcia.

On October 12 and 13, the Sanctuary is scheduled to host the International Anniversary Pilgrimage, presided over by the Archbishop of Braga, José Cordeiro. The event commemorates the sixth and final apparition of Our Lady in Cova da Iria on October 13, 1917, marking the conclusion of the annual cycle of major international anniversary pilgrimages. The program includes a Eucharistic Procession, a Candlelight Procession, an overnight prayer vigil, and an International Mass.
