Rescue of Maharashtra pilgrims from Nepal floods

Overview

Devastating floods in Nepal left over 100 pilgrims from Maharashtra stranded in Kathmandu. In response, the Bihar government and Sitamarhi district administration coordinated with the Maharashtra government to facilitate a rescue operation.

The pilgrims were brought across the Nepal border into Sitamarhi, where they were provided with food, water, and shelter. To assist their return to Nagpur, the Bihar Chief Secretary coordinated with the Railway Board to provide additional air-conditioned coaches for their train journey via Patna. During the process, Sitamarhi MP Devesh Chandra Thakur gained attention for using his fluency in Marathi to communicate with and reassure the travelers.

Following the evacuation efforts, 54 pilgrims have safely returned to Mumbai. These travelers had been on a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar when floods along the Tibet-Nepal border caused widespread destruction and disrupted travel routes. The evacuation was coordinated through the Shiv Sena Help Desk in Nepal, following directions from Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with arrangements facilitated by Shiv Sena General Secretary and former MP Rahul Shewale. While these 54 devotees have arrived safely, concerns persist regarding other individuals who may still be missing or whose whereabouts remain unknown following the flooding and subsequent travel disruptions.
