Resignation and expulsion of Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz

Overview

Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz resigned from her positions as Minister of Funds and Regional Policy and as the leader of the Polska 2050 party. Her departure from Donald Tusk’s government followed a contentious Sejm vote regarding local government term limits. Pełczyńska-Nałęcz criticized the governing coalition, describing the administration as a “government of stagnation” and stating that “values are more important than seats.”

Following her resignation, the board of the Polska 2050 party expelled her from its membership. Party officials, including Deputy Minister Michał Gramatyka, stated the decision was made because her uncoordinated resignation acted “to the detriment of the party and contrary to the resolutions of the party's statutory bodies.” Szymon Hołownia, who assumed leadership, described the removal as a “natural consequence” of her unilateral moves which undermined the coalition. He noted a fundamental difference in political methodology, stating that while she views the world through conflict, he prioritizes cooperation.

The political fallout expanded as Jan Szyszko, a former Deputy Minister of Funds and member of Polska 2050, also resigned. Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the vacancy, noting the ministry must focus on managing billions of euros from the National Recovery Plan (KPO) and indicated he is considering two non-partisan female candidates to replace her, emphasizing a need for professional expertise.

Regarding her future, Mateusz Morawiecki, leader of the Rozwój Plus association, denied rumors that his group is in discussions to recruit Pełczyńska-Nałęcz. While Morawiecki noted he agrees with her criticisms of the current government, he stated the two remain in “very different positions on many issues.”
