Restoration of religious sites in Italy

Overview

Several historic religious sites in Italy have reopened to the public following extensive restoration projects.

In Palermo, the Santa Cita Church and the Lanza Crypt in the Loggia district have reopened after restoration works were completed. The site, which dates back to the early 14th century, has historically served various functions, including as a convent and a military hospital.

In Turin, the Basilica Magistrale dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro is reopening to the public on Sunday, October 25, following a seven-year closure that began in 2019. The project involved extensive restoration and safety works on the dome and the drum of the hall. A central focus was the restoration of the monumental fresco ‘Trionfo della Croce’ by Paolo Emilio Morgari, created between 1858 and 1859. Located approximately forty meters above the ground, the restoration has improved the chromatic and compositional legibility of the work, which features more than three hundred figures. The basilica holds significant architectural and decorative value linked to the history of the Maurizian Order and the House of Savoy. Guided tours are expected to begin in 2027.

Additionally, the Church of San Paolo is set to reopen for worship on October 25 following a renovation period of over two and a half years. The restoration, which included the consecration of a new altar and baptismal font, was supported by approximately €59,346 in donations.
