Revocation of Miss North Carolina USA title and lawsuit

Overview

In August 2026, the Miss USA Organization and Blaize Productions revoked Brittany Boltinhouse's title as Miss North Carolina USA. The decision followed a review of social media posts from 2017–2019, which reportedly contained racial slurs, as well as homophobic, transphobic, and explicit content. Organizers cited the “totality of the circumstances” regarding past conduct that was inconsistent with pageant standards.

Miss USA President and CEO Thom Brodeur stated the organization does not tolerate “racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity,” emphasizing that the decision was based on a pattern of conduct rather than a single incident. Runner-up Myla Hadley has been promoted to the position.

Boltinhouse and her family have disputed the reasoning, claiming the dethronement was motivated by her identity as a “conservative Christian woman” and her political stance. Her attorney, Patrick Mincey, initially described the action as “wrongful and unjustified.”

Following the removal, Boltinhouse filed a defamation lawsuit in Duplin County Superior Court against the Miss USA Organization, Thom Brodeur, and Blaize Productions. She alleges the organizations maliciously coordinated a false public narrative to portray her as a “racist, homophobe, and bigot.” Her legal team contends that the use of racial slurs in the old posts was “colloquial” and that the organizers used the controversy to mask their true intentions.

New details in the legal action allege that pageant officials attempted to force Boltinhouse to approve an apology statement which she refused to sign. She further claims that Brodeur made public statements implying she had accepted accountability, which she asserts damaged her reputation. Boltinhouse is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, including more than $25,000, for harm to her reputation and livelihood.
