Sergio Mendoza defeats Ricardo Sandoval for flyweight titles

Overview

Ricardo Sandoval was scheduled to defend his unified WBA and WBC flyweight titles against Oscar Collazo on October 10 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Collazo withdrew due to a rib injury, leading to the selection of Sergio Mendoza as the new opponent.

Mendoza, standing approximately 5’8”, presented a different physical challenge for Sandoval compared to the shorter Collazo. On October 10, Mendoza secured the unified WBA and WBC flyweight titles by defeating Sandoval via a fifth-round stoppage.

Despite entering the bout as a heavy underdog and making his U.S. debut as a late replacement, Mendoza (28-1, 24 KOs) overcame an early setback. Sandoval (27-3, 18 KOs) initially appeared to take control in the second round after scoring a knockdown against Mendoza with a right hook. However, Mendoza recovered and utilized heavy pressure to drop Sandoval three times. The referee intervened in the fifth round, ending Sandoval’s reign as unified champion.

The loss marks a significant setback for Sandoval, who had been inactive for over a year following his July 2025 victory in Japan. Mendoza, who referred to himself as “Yoreme,” attributed his success to competing at his natural weight of 112 pounds.
