Rio de Janeiro election security and campaign tensions

Overview

The electoral period in Rio de Janeiro has been characterized by both interpersonal political conflict and large-scale security preparations.

During the campaign phase, candidates engaged in various confrontations. In Barra da Tijuca, Talita Galhardo (PSDB) and Sargento Britto (Republicanos) were involved in a verbal altercation over campaign staff payments and alliances. In Tijuca, state deputies Alexandre Knoploch (PL) and Flávio Serafini (PSOL) clashed, with Serafini alleging the use of pepper spray and a firearm, while Knoploch claimed he was responding to intimidation.

As the first round of elections approached, the state government transitioned toward a massive security operation. A command center was established at the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) to coordinate state and federal forces, including the Military Police, Civil Police, Army, and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin). This operation relies on a technological network of over 50,000 cameras featuring facial recognition and license plate reading, with Military Police officers stationed in each of the state’s 165 electoral zones to maintain contact with electoral judges.

In the 2026 election cycle, voting for the first round is scheduled for October 4, from 8:00 to 17:00 Brasília time. The election includes 70 seats for the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), with 12,857,389 eligible voters in the state. The Democratic Labour Party (PDT) has registered 68 candidates for these positions. Seats for state deputies are determined via a proportional system using an electoral coefficient, with real-time updates provided by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
