Rivers State flood relief efforts

Overview

The Rivers State Government has implemented a multi-stage relief response to mitigate the impact of flooding in various regions, including Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Obio/Akpor, and Port Harcourt City.

Initial efforts focused on the distribution of food supplies—such as rice, beans, garri, and oil—alongside essential non-food items including mattresses, pillows, blankets, and hygiene products. To manage health risks like cholera, the state also initiated free enrollment for residents into a health insurance scheme. Subsequent relief measures expanded to include direct financial assistance, with the government initiating cash transfers of N200,000 to the personal bank accounts of identified victims to ensure aid reaches beneficiaries without interference. Additionally, the state has moved toward addressing the root causes of the flooding by working to clear waterways and blocked drainages.

As flooding continues to damage homes, farmlands, and local livelihoods, the Ogoni Youth Federation has called on the state government to extend its relief programme to Ogoniland. The federation is requesting N200,000 in cash assistance and one year of free healthcare for verified victims in more than 23 affected communities, including Nyokhana, Lueku, and Bera, noting that relief packages have already been provided to other areas such as Eneka.
