Rivers State infrastructure and healthcare development

Overview

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has commissioned several healthcare and infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional services and security.

On August 21, the administration inaugurated the remodeled and fully furnished 105-bed Omoku Zonal Hospital in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area. The facility is intended to provide secondary healthcare to residents of Omoku and surrounding communities, including parts of Ahoada, reducing the need for travel to Port Harcourt for specialist treatment. During the unveiling, the Governor urged residents to protect the new infrastructure and equipment from vandalism.

Following this, the Governor commissioned additional projects, including a rehabilitated Air Force base runway in Port Harcourt and an upgraded Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Rumuigbo. The upgraded neuropsychiatric facility now includes a 100-bed rehabilitation center. During the commissioning, Fubara noted that the neuropsychiatric hospital had previously been used as a center for drug trafficking, where drugs were supplied to inmates undergoing rehabilitation. To address this, the administration has secured the premises with fencing and restricted access through designated gates.

In discussing these developments, Fubara emphasized the link between regional and national security, noting that Rivers State is a strategic hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. He stated that the security of Rivers State is “inseparable from the security of the nation.”
