Roberto Fernández performance and transfer interest

Overview

Espanyol striker Roberto Fernández has experienced a significant rise in form during the early stages of the LaLiga season. Following a period of limited success at Sporting de Braga, Fernández began the season with a scoring streak that prompted Espanyol manager Manolo González to suggest the player could be playing for Manchester City by next year if his performance continues.

His momentum continued as he reached six goals in his first six league matches. This performance resulted in his first call-up to the Spanish national team by manager Luis de la Fuente, making him the 49th player in RCD Espanyol history to be selected for the senior national squad. Since joining the club in January 2025, the 24-year-old has recorded 19 goals in 65 matches.

Following his recent form, which includes scoring six goals in seven matches, FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has reportedly expressed interest in signing Fernández. This potential move comes amid previous transfer tensions between Espanyol and Barcelona regarding the player Joan García in June 2025.

Fernández recently made his debut for the Spanish national team in a UEFA Nations League match against Czechia, a 3-1 victory. Although he did not score, he played the full 90 minutes. His international appearance has triggered an automatic increase in his release clause from 25 million to 30 million euros. Fernández has expressed happiness regarding his debut, noting that playing for the national team is a “significant milestone” in his career.

Interest in the striker has expanded to the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur intensifying its pursuit of Fernández. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has identified the player as a primary target to address a lack of goals, particularly as the club scrutinizes current attacking options like Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. Additionally, interest has emerged from several Bundesliga clubs.
