Overview

Romania continues to host various theatrical and artistic initiatives, including international residencies and domestic competitions.

A cultural residency project, ‘InBetween Memory. A Romania–Portugal Residency’, is scheduled for the Aureliu Manea National Theatre in Turda from late August to late September 2026. Coordinated by Portuguese director Hugo Miguel Coelho, the program aims to foster dialogue through research and artistic development, concluding with a presentation in Évora, Portugal. Additionally, the production ‘INMORTALIDAD’ is set to premiere in Bucharest on September 2, 2026.

Domestic competitions for emerging talent have recently concluded or progressed. The 29th Gala HOP, organized by UNITER in co-production with the Constanța State Theater, took place from August 27 to 30 in Constanța. Under the artistic direction of Silviu Purcărete, 25 young actors participated in the event, which followed a training camp in Piatra Neamț and featured a mandatory segment titled ‘SEMNĂTURĂ. BEST OF’ to showcase individual artistic identity.

In the field of scenography, the 11th DbutanT Festival expanded its selection to seven young scenographers for the International Program in Scenography (IPS) – BIRD IN SPACE. Running from August 24 to September 6 in Ovidiu, participants work alongside artists from 16 countries to develop site-specific installations, with public presentations scheduled for September 5.

Furthermore, the HOP Agency, founded in 2016 by Miklós Bács, is transitioning into a comprehensive online platform. It is designed to serve theater, film, and performance artists by providing casting profiles, professional biographies, and centralized casting announcements.
