Royal Caribbean cruise diversions to Canada

Overview

Severe weather conditions off the US East Coast have forced Royal Caribbean to reroute multiple vessels to Canadian ports to ensure passenger and crew safety.

On October 19, the Vision of the Seas, which departed from Baltimore, Maryland, was diverted from its scheduled stop in Bermuda to Saint John, New Brunswick. Due to extreme winds and high seas, passengers were unable to disembark upon arrival. The cruise line provided compensation packages, including onboard credits and vouchers for future trips.

By October 23, the scale of the diversions increased. The Oasis of the Seas, carrying more than 5,000 passengers, was rerouted from a seven-day trip departing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, to Halifax, Nova Scotia. This trip was originally scheduled to include stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau in the Bahamas, and the private island CocoCay. The redirection was prompted by a severe low-pressure system and was announced approximately 12 to 24 hours before departure. As a result, passengers faced autumn temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius instead of the expected 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Some travelers reported receiving partial refunds and travel vouchers.

New details regarding the Oasis of the Seas disruption highlight passenger frustration over the sudden climate shift. US actress Mikayla Iverson publicly expressed her anger on Instagram, noting that her family lacked appropriate clothing for the Canadian climate. To mitigate dissatisfaction, Royal Caribbean offered compensation including partial refunds, travel vouchers, and onboard credits ranging from $200 to $600 per cabin.

Additionally, the Independence of the Seas was diverted from a scheduled visit to Bermuda to an overnight stay in Saint John, New Brunswick. A third vessel, Harmony of the Seas, has had its itinerary altered due to unfavorable forecasts, though it is still expected to reach its scheduled destinations in the Bahamas.
