Buenos Aires International Marathon 2026

Overview

The 42nd edition of the Buenos Aires International Marathon, held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, drew a record-breaking turnout of 16,384 runners. Organized by Asociación de Carreras y Maratones Ñandú, the event featured 5,769 international athletes from 64 different countries. Brazil contributed the largest international group with 2,769 runners, followed by participants from Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including 18°C temperatures and nearly 90% humidity, the race saw high competitive levels. In the men’s category, Kenyan athlete Bethwel Kibet Chumba secured victory with a time of 2:08:22. He was followed by Rwandan runner John Hakizimana in second place and fellow Kenyan Felix Kiptoo Kirwa in third. For the Argentine delegation, Ignacio Erario was the top performer, finishing ninth overall in 2:16:34.

In the women’s category, Kenyan athlete Rebecca Kangogo Chesir set a new course record with a time of 2:23:31, followed by compatriot Rodah Jepkorir Tanui. The top Argentine female finisher was Chiara Mainetti, who completed the race in 2:38:25.

The course, which holds a World Athletics Label, traversed iconic landmarks including Palermo, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, La Boca, the Obelisco, and Plaza de Mayo. To manage the large crowds, organizers utilized a wave start system and a ‘blue line’ painted on the asphalt to guide runners. The event continues to serve as a major driver of sports tourism as Buenos Aires pursues its objective of becoming a ‘World Capital of Sport’ in 2027.
