Saab defense contracts with Finland and Netherlands

Saab has secured defense contracts with Finland and the Netherlands to provide advanced military technology.

Finland has placed an initial order for the RBS 70 NG short-range air defence system, valued at approximately SEK 1.2 billion. This system utilizes laser beam guidance to resist electronic jamming and is designed to counter low-altitude threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The contract includes ammunition, training, spare parts, and maintenance, with the objective of having the capabilities fully operational by the end of the 2020s.

In the Netherlands, the Ministry of Defence has contracted Saab for Barracuda mobile camouflage systems to protect vehicles like Fennek reconnaissance vehicles and Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers from various sensor spectrums.

Expanding its Dutch defense portfolio, the Netherlands and Sweden have signed a Letter of Intent for the purchase of a Saab GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. Signed by Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius and Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson, the agreement focuses on acquiring a dedicated national aircraft to enhance situational awareness, separate from NATO-wide procurement efforts to replace E-3A Sentry fleets. The Dutch Ministry of Defense expects delivery by 2031, though Royal Netherlands Air Force crews may begin training on the Swedish aircraft as early as 2028. Saab CEO Micael Johansson stated the system will strengthen national and NATO capabilities by enabling ‘earlier threat detection and faster response times.’

Under the GlobalEye agreement, the Netherlands plans to integrate its single aircraft into a joint operational pool with three Swedish units to ensure continuous availability during maintenance. Additionally, Polish defense entities, including Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A., have expressed interest in collaborating with Saab regarding the GlobalEye system to enhance local maintenance and support capabilities.
