Sade Traditional Village fire in Lombok
Overview
The fire in Sade Traditional Village, located in the Pujut District of Central Lombok, has caused extensive damage to both the physical structures and the economic foundations of the Sasak community. Beyond the destruction of 75 traditional houses and various public facilities, the blaze specifically targeted the livelihoods of local entrepreneurs.
Female business owners, including clients of PNM Mekaar, suffered significant losses as the fire destroyed essential weaving tools and finished goods, such as songket and Sasak shawls, along with the kiosks used to sell these crafts to tourists. In response to these economic setbacks, PNM has deployed aid to the area. PNM President Director Kindaris stated that the organization intends to support residents throughout the recovery process to ensure they can eventually resume business activities and restore economic stability.
Following the disaster, the Indonesian Ministry of Culture has initiated reconstruction planning. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon informed Commission X of the DPR RI that the estimated budget for the project ranges between Rp25 billion and Rp30 billion. The plan aims to rebuild 75 traditional houses, 65 kiosks, one mosque, and the surrounding area.
To prevent future incidents, the Ministry is reviewing the village design, specifically addressing the close proximity of houses and the need for improved electrical installations and fire mitigation measures. Coordination is currently underway with the Governor and the State Secretariat to ensure efficient management through the Directorate General of Cultural and Traditional Protection, aiming to prevent overlapping responsibilities among involved ministries. This follows earlier calls from Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for strengthened disaster mitigation and safety audits.
