San Miguelito cable car project in Panama

Overview

Doppelmayr Panamá Corp. and Metro de Panamá, S. A. have signed a contract valued at approximately US$255.16 million to construct a 6.6-kilometer cable car system in San Miguelito, Panama. The project is designed to enhance mobility for high-density communities in the San Miguelito and Panama districts, specifically targeting areas with challenging topography.

The aerial transport system will feature six strategic stations: Balboa, Cincuentenario, Samaria, Mano de Piedra, Valle de Urracá, and Torrijos Carter. It is intended to provide direct connectivity to Metro Line 2 at the Cincuentenario station and integrate with the existing bus network.

The contract encompasses design, construction, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning, with an option for maintenance. Dominican firm Malespín Constructora has been appointed to handle civil works, including the execution of foundations, stations, and support towers.

Following the signing, the agreement must now be sent to the Contraloría General de la República for review and endorsement. This step represents the final requirement before formal construction can begin. If approvals proceed as planned, the system is expected to begin operations in early 2029.
