Saudi Arabia sports infrastructure and FIFA hosting
Overview
Saudi Arabia is advancing large-scale sports infrastructure development as part of its Vision 2030 objectives. Current projects include the development of King Fahd Sports City in Riyadh, the Jeddah Central Stadium, and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium in Qiddiya. The Aramco Stadium in Al Khobar, with a capacity of approximately 47,000, is expected to be completed soon to host matches for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
Preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup have now entered the official operational phase. With exactly 100 days remaining until the tournament begins on January 7, 2027, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) have transitioned from planning to full operational readiness. The tournament will feature 24 national teams competing across eight stadiums in three Saudi cities.
Mai Al-Herabi, CEO of the LOC, noted that over 50 entities are working in coordination to ensure a seamless experience for visitors. Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), previously stated that the Kingdom is on track to meet “new standards of excellence in stadium quality and fan experience.” The tournament is scheduled to open with a match between Saudi Arabia and Palestine, and the official match ball, ‘Khuzama’, has been unveiled.
Following the selection of Saudi Arabia to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the nation’s infrastructure plans have expanded to support a tournament featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. The hosting strategy involves utilizing 15 stadiums across five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and Neom. While hosting rights are confirmed, official tournament dates remain undetermined due to logistical considerations such as summer temperatures and Ramadan.
