Sean Sharaf and Gable Steveson UFC 331 bout

Overview

At UFC 331 in Los Angeles, Sean Sharaf secured a major upset by knocking out heavyweight prospect and Olympic wrestling gold medalist Gable Steveson in 12 seconds. Sharaf, an underdog and Marine Corps veteran, ended the fight with a powerful left hook, marking one of the fastest knockouts in heavyweight history and dropping Steveson’s record to 4-1. The bout was preceded by tension during the press conference when Sharaf confronted Steveson regarding a 2019 sexual assault allegation. Steveson has since addressed those allegations, stating that the matter was previously reviewed by law enforcement and a Title IX investigation, which resulted in no criminal charges or findings of responsibility. He further noted that the case was dropped by the District Attorney due to insufficient evidence. Following the knockout, Steveson and his mentor, Jon Jones, exited the octagon before the official result was announced. Jones later clarified on social media that he made the decision to take Steveson to the back to ensure his well-being, stating, “It was my decision to take Gable straight to the back... my instant reaction was to get my friend to the back to make sure he was ok.” This conduct drew criticism from commentators Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan; Cormier specifically labeled Steveson an ‘ungrateful loser’ for failing to acknowledge the victory or wait for his opponent’s hand to be raised. Coach Eric Nicksick also questioned the exit, noting that staying in the cage to acknowledge a loss is standard sportsmanship. Analysts have offered varying perspectives on Steveson’s future. Henry Cejudo suggested Steveson may be facing a “mental block,” while Usman Nurmagomedov pointed to a lack of amateur MMA experience. UFC commentator Jon Anik described the loss as an “appreciable setback” that makes Steveson’s longevity in the promotion uncertain.
