Search and rescue operations in Chile

Overview

Search and rescue operations have been conducted across various regions of Chile to locate missing persons.

In the Chilean Antarctic Province, the Chilean Navy concluded a nine-day search for the crew of the motorboat Talymar. Following 216 hours of continuous maritime, aerial, and submarine tracking involving over 100 personnel, authorities ended the active phase after the vessel lost communication near the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Difficult weather and complex geography had impacted the operation.

In other incidents, authorities responded to emergencies in Isla Tabón and Bahía de Concepción. In Isla Tabón, specialized drone teams were deployed to search for a person missing for six days in dense vegetation. Authorities have also considered requesting support from the Grupo Agreste unit from Puerto Montt to reinforce land-based efforts.

In Bahía de Concepción, maritime units and divers were activated to locate a second individual after one person was successfully rescued from the sea. The incident involved a Zodiac boat that overturned off the coast of Talcahuano while two crew members were returning to the vessel ‘El Manantial’ after collecting supplies. The missing individual has been identified as an Ecuadorian citizen. Captain Camila Ovalle Lagos confirmed that coordinated efforts, including maritime units, land patrols, divers, and drone support, are being concentrated on specific sectors to locate the person.
