Señor de los Milagros festivities expand to US and Peru
Overview
Religious festivities for the ‘Mes Morado’ have commenced across Peru and the United States, centered on devotion to the Señor de los Milagros. In Lima, thousands of devotees gathered at the Santuario de las Nazarenas for the first procession on October 3, which necessitated significant traffic restrictions in the Cercado de Lima and modifications to public transport corridors.
The procession features members of the Brotherhood dressed in purple, carrying a replica of a 17th-century fresco. The original image is venerated for its survival during a devastating earthquake in 1655.
Regional and international activities are also underway. In Arequipa, the first procession utilized a modified schedule to accommodate early morning masses, while in Puno, festivities began with a procession dedicated to children. In the United States, the Brotherhood of the Lord of the Miracles is organizing major celebrations in Connecticut, specifically in Stamford, Bridgeport, and New Haven. In Stamford, festivities include a rosary prayer and a procession involving approximately 300 carriers from various delegations, including groups from Hartford, New Haven, and New York.
Additionally, there is anticipation regarding a planned apostolic visit by Pope Leo XIV to Peru. Officials have noted the possibility that the image of the Señor de los Milagros may accompany the Pope’s mass at the Las Palmas Air Base on November 16, citing the Pontiff’s historical connection to the icon and his previous blessings of the image.
