Serbian athletes at European Athletics Championships
Overview
Ahead of the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Serbian athletes expressed high ambitions. Javelin thrower Adriana Vilagoš aimed for a top-place finish, seeking to improve upon her season best of 63.83 meters. High jumper Angelina Topić also expressed confidence, aiming to deliver her best result against a competitive field.
During the competition, Adriana Vilagoš secured the bronze medal in the women’s javelin throw with a mark of 60.93 meters. This achievement marked her third European championship medal, following previous silver medals in Munich and Rome. The gold medal was won by Croatia’s Sara Kolak (62.43m), marking her first major championship gold ten years after her Olympic victory in Rio de Janeiro, followed by Germany’s Julia Ulbricht (61.53m). Following her victory, Kolak returned to Zagreb, noting that the medal serves as a reward for her perseverance through “both good and difficult times over the last decade.”
In the women’s high jump, Angelina Topić finished 12th after successfully clearing 1.83 meters but failing to clear the 1.88-meter mark in three attempts. Topić attributed her performance to challenging weather conditions, stating, “I froze, I couldn't feel my legs, I was shaking the whole time.” In the same event, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh took gold, while Montenegro’s Marija Vuković claimed bronze with a height of 1.95 meters.
