Serbian medical graduate employment program

Overview

Under the ‘Employment Program for the Most Successful Graduates of Medical Faculties and Secondary Medical Schools’, the Serbian government has awarded employment contracts to 100 top medical graduates and 380 nurses and technicians.

Initiated in 2018, the program provides guaranteed positions in various health institutions alongside opportunities for professional development, such as free specialization and doctoral studies. Acting Minister of Health Zlatibor Lončar stated that the initiative aims to ensure top-tier professionals manage the country’s healthcare and to prevent the ‘brain drain’ of highly skilled staff to foreign countries by providing economic stability and advanced training within Serbia.

Specific interest from new professionals has been noted in fields including nephrology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, radiotherapy, pathology, and radiodiagnostics.

In October 2026, a ceremony at the Palace of Serbia marked the awarding of these contracts. Following these domestic placements, the Ministry of Health’s Diaspora Cooperation Office reported that 14 additional healthcare workers are returning to Serbia from countries including Germany, the United States, Switzerland, Slovenia, Saudi Arabia, Austria, and England. This brings the total number of returning medical professionals to nearly 500. Minister Lončar noted that the return of these specialists symbolizes the ‘strengthening of the Serbian healthcare system’ and reflects confidence in the country’s future.
