Severe weather across the United States

Overview

The United States has experienced a period of unsettled weather characterized by severe storms and heavy rainfall across various regions.

Initial reports indicated tropical storm conditions in Maui with wind gusts up to 70 mph, alongside risks of flash flooding and damaging winds in the Washington, D.C. area and the Eastern Plains. Heavy rain also posed flooding concerns in Indiana.

By mid-August, weather patterns shifted to include a ‘Slight Risk’ for severe weather in North Iowa, with concerns over hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding expected to persist through the week. In the Western United States, monsoonal moisture continued to trigger isolated thunderstorms in the Central Mountains, Southeastern Idaho, and the Southwest Wyoming border, producing intense downpours and wind gusts up to 45 mph.

Recent forecasts indicate widespread rain and storms moving from eastern Kansas into Mid-Missouri overnight, with potential for strong wind gusts and localized flash flooding of 2 to 3 inches. Severe threats are expected to focus near and south of a cold front in southern Missouri.

In the eastern United States, weather patterns near Rochester, New York, and the Lake Ontario region are shifting due to a cold front. While skies are clearing, humidity remains high. Scattered showers and storms are possible mid-week along the southern shore of Lake Ontario and east of the Lake Erie shore, though these are not currently expected to carry an elevated risk of flooding or high winds.
