Severe weather and flooding in Extremadura

Overview

Severe storms and heavy rainfall in Extremadura, Spain, led to the activation and subsequent deactivation of the Inuncaex flood protection plan. The weather event resulted in 239 managed incidents and over 1,200 emergency calls to the 112 service. In Corte de Peleas, Badajoz, 16 people were evacuated after water affected five homes, including four occupied residences. The storm also impacted two vehicles and an electrical tower in the area. High rainfall warnings were issued for northern Cáceres and the Alagón river basin, with some areas facing potential accumulations of up to 120 liters per square meter. The emergency plan was deactivated at midnight following a decrease in water levels and improving conditions.

More recently, the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) issued a red alert for heavy rainfall across several regions of Badajoz, specifically Barros, Serena, and the southern part of the province. Forecasters warned that precipitation could reach up to 120 liters per square meter within a 12-hour period. In response to the rising risk, Protección Civil activated the INUNCAEX flood plan. Authorities advised the population to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay informed through the National Alert Network. Infrastructure was impacted as the EX-112 road was temporarily closed at kilometer 36 due to water flowing over the road, though traffic was later restored. In Cáceres, warnings remained for Villuercas, Montánchez, and the Meseta cacereña, with potential for intense storms and hail, including rainfall rates of up to 20 liters per hour.

As the weather emergency continues, red and orange alerts have been triggered across Spain. In Extremadura, particularly in Badajoz, the red alert for heavy rainfall has resulted in over 1,000 emergency calls to the 112 service, with dozens of incidents and multiple road closures reported due to flooding and landslides.
