Slovak political scandal involving Igor Matovič
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 the Slovak election campaign was shaken by staged online videos that mocked ordinary voters, a tactic promoted by former prime‑minister Igor Matovič. He posted a clip from a Nové Zámky rally showing a 69‑year‑old supporter exposing herself after he signed campaign merchandise and warned that more footage could appear online. At the same time he toured towns offering 200 euros in food vouchers to participants of a quiz that criticised rival prime‑minister Robert Fico, presenting the payouts as charity funded by public money. Progressive Slovakia MP Štefan Kišš accused coalition partner Hlas of diverting about €31 million meant for science into private contracts and paying party assistants low hourly rates, linking the practice to Matovič’s earlier fiscal policies; Hlas rejected the claims.
A July 19 report highlighted Matovič’s use of the videos as click‑bait “troll” tactics, contrasting his approach with other candidates who relied on bar tours or pension‑focused outreach.
In early August, the controversy broadened: a former OĽaNO MP now with Matovič’s Hnutie Slovensko was accused in the Czech Republic of sexually targeting 13‑ and 14‑year‑old girls online. Matovič argued he could not be held responsible for the actions of former movement members. A Košice city councilor posted videos attacking the campaign’s use of a ministry‑reserved parking space, its lack of a substantive program and its focus on criticizing Fico rather than presenting its own policies.
