Slovenian emergency and rescue service activity
Overview
Slovenian emergency and rescue services have seen a rise in operational activity and a corresponding focus on preparedness. Data from the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia indicated an 18 percent increase in mountain rescue interventions through early September, with a total of 607 cases recorded. Primary causes for these interventions included lack of terrain familiarity (146 cases), slips (129 cases), and poor physical fitness (105 cases). Additionally, 72 interventions were necessitated by inadequate personal or technical equipment. Rescuers noted that the year could reach record levels of activity and emphasized that better preparation and appropriate footwear could prevent many incidents, particularly in areas like Mount Triglav and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
In response to various risks, emergency services conducted large-scale training exercises in October. These drills included a natural disaster simulation in Domžale involving 325 personnel to address wildfire risks caused by drought, as well as water rescue training on the Drava River in Maribor to prepare for incidents involving river tourists and boat operators.
Volunteer fire departments have also expanded training and community outreach. In Dolga vas, drills included simulated kitchen fires and technical training for roof operations, alongside community events featuring first aid demonstrations. In Lovrenc na Pohorju, firefighters conducted drills simulating forestry accidents, utilizing drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to locate missing persons. These exercises highlighted the necessity of specialized equipment, such as protective clothing suitable for both forest fires and technical interventions.
