São Paulo FC performance and leadership uncertainty

Overview

São Paulo Futebol Clube continues to face instability characterized by performance declines and financial difficulties. Although the club ended a ten-match winless streak in the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 2-1 victory over Red Bull Bragantino, the overall campaign remains inconsistent. Since the departure of Hernán Crespo, the team has struggled to maintain high success rates. Head coach Dorival Júnior is experiencing a period of volatility; following a 2-1 defeat against Santos, he described the team’s performance as “inexplicable” and called for internal unity to prioritize collective goals over personal interests. Recent results have seen the team drop to 11th place in the Campeonato Brasileiro, ten points behind Bahia in the race for a Libertadores spot. This follows a 2-0 loss to Cruzeiro. Amidst these challenges, Júnior is looking toward the return of Lucas Moura from an Achilles tendon injury to bolster the squad. Internal friction persists due to financial challenges, including reported delays in salary and image rights payments. Adding to the historical context of the club’s recent transitions, former executive Rui Costa recently defended his decision to dismiss Hernán Crespo, citing a lack of synchronization between the coaching staff and management regarding player signings and competitive competitiveness. Institutional uncertainty has intensified as the club approaches December elections. Current president Harry Massis is not expected to run for reelection, creating a leadership vacuum that has stalled major negotiations. This political transition has left the future of coach Dorival Júnior, whose contract expires at the end of the year, unresolved, as his decision to stay depends on the club’s future leadership. Furthermore, the long-term status of five players—Rafael Toloi, Iago, Cauly, Lucas, and Artur—remains unaddressed due to the electoral period.
