Social unrest and Limoges town hall fire in France
Overview
A fire destroyed the 19th-century Limoges town hall, causing the building’s wooden clock tower to collapse. Mayor Guillaume Guérin described the event as a “historical tragedy for France.” Two suspects, aged 34 and 66, were arrested and linked by prosecutors to radical-left networks.
The incident occurred amidst escalating social unrest across France, following weeks of nationwide demonstrations regarding high schools, the cost of living, and fiscal deficits. In response to the violence, authorities implemented an overnight curfew and restricted public gatherings in the Limoges city center.
Following the fire, the Fondation du patrimoine launched an urgent fundraising campaign to save the historic structure, which was built between 1879 and 1883. Under the supervision of the DRAC, emergency operations are underway to secure remaining intact sections and prevent further deterioration. A national fundraising effort has already collected over 600,000 euros to assist with reconstruction and priority safeguarding measures.
To address the event, the broadcaster France 3 announced a special 30-minute program titled ‘Limoges: reconstruire ensemble’. Hosted by Stéphane Bern, the program is scheduled to air live from the square in front of the building on October 31. It will feature testimonies from historians, local residents, and firefighters, including Commander Aurélien Sabourdy and Chief Warrant Officer Frédéric Dominget.
