South Korean telecommunications network management

Overview

South Korean telecommunications providers are deploying specialized technologies and personnel to manage high-traffic events and holiday periods.

In early September, KT utilized 5G Standalone (SA) network slicing technology to maintain critical safety communications and real-time CCTV video transmission during the Seoul International Fireworks Festival. This technology allowed for dedicated virtual networks to ensure stability despite surges in general user data traffic.

As the Chuseok holiday approached, the three major carriers—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—expanded their operational plans to include specific consumer benefits and enhanced monitoring. SK Telecom introduced expanded roaming data sharing for its ‘baro’ plan and various domestic membership discounts. KT offered free video calls and movie discounts via Genie TV, alongside airport lounge access and roaming packages for Southeast Asia.

LG Uplus focused on roaming services, such as its ‘ixi-O’ AI roaming call service available in approximately 170 countries, as well as smart home security through ‘HomeCam Lite’. To maintain network stability during the holiday travel surge, LG Uplus implemented 24-hour monitoring of 5G and LTE base stations at major transport hubs.
