South Pacific and New Zealand tourism market engagement
Overview
Tourism sectors in the South Pacific and New Zealand are implementing various initiatives to strengthen ties with the Australian market and support industry professionals.
In the South Pacific, Vanuatu is launching the ‘Tok Tok Vanuatu’ trade event in Brisbane and Sydney to connect its island operators with Australian travel advisors, following a 42% increase in Australian visitors in January 2026 compared to January 2020. Additionally, the Treasures of the South Pacific 2026 Australian Roadshow, representing 11 destinations, concluded with record attendance across six Australian cities. ToSP President Richard Skewes confirmed the roadshow will return in 2027.
In New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand and WellingtonNZ have introduced an incentive program for Australian travel advisors involving advanced cuisine training, offering a food-focused weekend in Wellington as a prize. This is supplemented by the Explore New Zealand Discount Programme, which provides travel advisors discounts ranging from free to 50 percent off on over 500 products across 27 regions, including accommodation and Māori cultural experiences.
To support the sector, Intrepid Travel is expanding its local workforce in Auckland to provide better expertise and faster response times to travel advisors. Separately, officials have issued guidance for international visitors regarding the necessity of comprehensive medical insurance to cover healthcare costs during their stay.
