Southern Cone higher education cooperation

Regional academic cooperation and development initiatives are progressing across Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. In late July 2026, representatives from Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil met in Paysandú, Uruguay, to organize the III Binational and III Trinational Higher-Education Jornadas. Scheduled for September 2026, the forum focuses on “Regional Networks for Transforming Higher Education” to promote cross-border research, student mobility, and academic integration within the Río Uruguay basin.

By late August 2026, focus expanded to specific institutional developments and regional growth. In Argentina, the new rector of UNCuyo has prioritized digital modernization and industry ties, while in Uruguay, the University of the Republic is working to expand its presence in the Litoral Norte region and address budgetary needs. Furthermore, scientific-technological entrepreneurship projects involving UCU and UTEC are being implemented in Salto to link academic research with local productive sectors.

Additional developments in late August include the Universidad de la República initiating academic discussions regarding the reduction of working hours in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor. In Argentina, the Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero (UNSE) hosted a Health Education Week, the Universidad de Concepción del Uruguay (UCU) held graduation ceremonies for distance learning, and the Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche (UNAJ) provided specialized training for SMEs in Saladillo. Meanwhile, the REDFACE network met in Catamarca to strengthen public higher education in Northern Argentina.

Recent updates in late August also highlight leadership transitions and strategic planning. In Mendoza, Adriana García held her first cabinet meeting at UNCuyo, and in Buenos Aires, Claudia Negri and Marcelo Melo were elected to lead the UBA Faculty of Medical Sciences. In Uruguay, Rector Héctor Cancela noted a significant gap between the Universidad de la República’s requested funds and government allocations for the 2027 budget.
