Spain company formation trends
Overview
In late July 2026, Spain’s official notary statistics showed a 3.4% year-on-year decline in new company registrations for May, with 11,156 firms created. The drop was observed across ten autonomous communities, most sharply in the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and the Valencian Community, while a handful of regions such as La Rioja, Extremadura and Castilla y León recorded notable growth.
A week later, data from private and public entrepreneur-support services highlighted a contrasting picture of ongoing company creation. The private Punto de Atención al Emprendedor in Madrid reported processing 3,888 registrations since 2012, with a 14.8% rise in limited-liability firms in 2024. Public accompaniment points in Extremadura had assisted over 16,800 entrepreneurs since January 2024, facilitating more than 2,000 new firms and delivering extensive advisory services.
By mid-August, new data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) indicated a significant shift in June, which saw 11,153 new commercial societies created—the highest June total since 2007 and a 1.7% increase year-on-year. However, this growth in volume was accompanied by a 22.2% year-on-year drop in subscribed capital, totaling 344 million euros, with the average capital per company decreasing by 23.5% to 30,847 euros. Additionally, business mortality rose as 1,814 companies were dissolved in June, a 14.6% increase over the previous year. Conversely, capital increases grew by 16.6%, with 2,639 companies expanding their capital for a total exceeding 1.98 billion euros. Sectoral data noted that real estate, financial, and insurance sectors led new creations at 19.6%, followed by construction at 15.9%. In Catalonia, business creation also reached a historical June record with 2,142 new companies, a 9.8% year-on-year increase, despite a 20.2% rise in regional business dissolutions.
